Useful Apps

Each app on this list has earned its keep on long passages, in foreign ports, or just keeping life aboard a little easier.

Starlink

Starlink

Starlink has been a game changer for yachties. Previously internet on yachts was only for the super yachts, Starlink has opened this world up for us regular sailors. Many only buy the home edition dish, we opted for the marine one which is more expensive, but we can say that not once during our crossing did we loose signal. We streamed Netflix, Apple TV as if we were at home and not once did it buffer. Many we have heard have signal issues with the home editions in rough waters, home edition works well in anchorage and marinas. Ours works well everywhere. We have Global Roam -50g and switch on priority when we do a passage if the 50g is finished.

PredictWind

PredictWind

We use this app to do our sail planning and expected date of departure. We use it as a guidance as it sometimes wants to take you into a thunderstorm, which we like to avoid, but good to show wind and waves which is what we mainly use it for

Sailserver

Sailserver

Airalo

Airalo

This app is really useful if your iPhone/Android can take e-sims. We have this app loaded and before we get to the country we download a data sim and get data bundles on this app. The prices we see vary by country and can be anything from $4,50 to $9,50 per gig for 7 days, but there are various packages. Also not there is a "global card". Customer support is also good if you find a problem, although sometimes a bit slow in responding.

eSim io

eSim io

The main difference vs Airalo: ONE eSIM download — you then add packages onto the same eSIM, and all packages are valid for 30 days even for 1GB. Discover OneSIM: eSIM io's OneSIM feature offers a pay-as-you-go eSIM valid worldwide. One eSIM valid in over 200 destinations. Either pay-as-you-use or get a timed data plan. Unlimited io balance.

Not sure if google has something similar.

WhatsApp

WhatsApp

Most people have this app, but if you do not have it, then download it. We noticed that all marinas, countries are using WhatsApp more than we even did and there are so many groups with good information for sailors and a platform to even ask questions and get help.

Garmin

Garmin

We bought a Garmin GPSMAP® 86i with inReach and Worldwide Basemap which allows us to send messages and track us every 10 seconds and get weather reports (subscription required). We took this as a backup to the Starlink system, it allows friends and family to track us as well and is a great for the "Go bag"! In thunderstorms it is also the device we put into the oven to protect it. We have also connected it to our predict wind subscription which keeps a nice track of exactly how we have sailed (see our "Live Location" page

Keep Family connected. We have bought one for our mother so we can send her photos that keep showing up for her. Even her grandchildren send her photos that appear on the screen. We liked it so much we got one for the boat so we also can be kept up to date and even have our memories come up.

TurboScan

TurboScan

App where you can scan a document and send it in many formats (we usually send pdf) via email, download or save to photo. Use it if someone wants documents. There is a free version but it does not allow you to save all your scans or it limits them, we have the paid version as we use it quite a bit. It is nice as it sees the document, frames it, and takes 3 photos to get the best one for you. So they all look like they have been scanned with a proper scanner.
