Day 14 The City Line

As I sit here on my last watch of our crossing I am thinking about just how far we have come on this enormously wild and magnificent piece of Ocean, we have sailed almost 5000 nautical miles since we left Port Owen. We have experienced so much and learnt so much about sailing, each other and ourselves, I can honestly say that I am super proud of all of us and all that we have achieved, what just a few years ago felt like an almost impossible journey that I could hardly piece together in my head, has finally come to the point of arriving on a new continent.

Monday it will be exactly 2 months since we left our friends and fellow sailors behind in Port Owen, going through the photos and messages today of when we set sail, got me all teary eyed again. ☺️

We have met some wonderful new people along the way both in Walvis Bay and on St Helena Island.  I think that is what the journey is all about. Meeting new people, experiencing different cultures, food and all the beauty that new places have to offer.  Our journey is about getting to places that you can't or would not go to by plane or car, all those extra and unusual places off the track that we like to experience.

We had a pretty bumpy start to our journey with some rough seas and severe sickness and then suddenly just like that... it all turned and we had great weather and near perfect winds almost the whole way and best of all healthy crew.

The 5 of us have gotten along really well, normal ups and downs of being confined in a small space, however we have respected each others need for space and alone time. Everyone pulled their weight, helped with everything whenever it was required regardless of being on shift or sleeping. Thankfully we had no cry babies on board, just strong solid humans. We have met many people that have done crossings, shorter ones than this and friendships have been broken, but not with us. We chose our crew well ❤️

I can't speak for everyone on board right now, but I have certainly enjoyed this crossing so much more than I thought I ever would, the solace and calm as well as the little bits of surprises that the pond throws at us. Not seeing land for weeks is actually quite a wonderful thing, just absorbing nature, at its most natural, you cannot imagine how amazing the diamonds in sky look at night. Makyla's favourite place on the boat if the weather was not too rough was on the top deck with a pillow and headphones at night just enjoying the stars. The colour of the water and so much more. The excitement when I see a bird, is just incredible as we realise how we take so many things for granted.

Tonight the diamonds in the sky are not shinning as bright as we have a very bright city line up ahead, which are the lights of Salvador reminding me we are soon going to make landfall. We have grown as humans and certainly as sailors we have learnt an incredible amount on this trip. A part of me is sad that this crossing is almost over, as I have to go back to wearing a bra and shoes. 😂

Another part of our adventure begins here.

We will enter the bay at first light so we will take it really slow tonight and let you all know when we are safely tied up.

We are now 31 nm from our destination and excited to see what will be our new home ground for a while, for however long we want that to be, before its time to move on.
