Not Done with Walvis Bay Yet

Our time in Walvis was supposed to be coming to an end as we should have left already. Well, that is what we thougtht the plan was.
Going back a couple of days, to when we checked out of Goanikontes, we decided to head to the Walvis Bay Yacht Club for a drink, Shane and Makyla met us there, completely  worn out from the long day of fishing, after a quick catch up with us, they headed back to get some well deserved rest as they intended to have another day of fishing. They seriously should not have left us kids alone 😂  Eric and I had a wonderful rest in the silence of the desert and were totally up for a couple of drinks and chatting to some of the local club members, and of course we got a whole lot more than we bargained for.

We spent the evening chatting to some of the members and really hit it off with Leon, obviously it turned into a late night and just like that our departure out of Africa was delayed by a week. Leon our new friend was turning 60 and invited us to his party and would absolutely not take no for an answer, well who are we to argue with a local. So we graciously accepted the invitation, the party was to last all weekend from 1 March - 3 March.

The next morning, we told Lester and Angela what our plans were, and they were really cool, I think they were more than happy to have a full weekend break from us, as I am sure by now they also needed a couple of date nights.

Leon very kindly invited Makyla as well, because there was going to be enough young people her age to keep her well entertained.

What an awesome experience,  a solid 3 hours of driving on a dirt road with magnificent views and constantly changing scenery, we were heading up to an area called Soussusvlei, to a very beautiful and remote lodge called Moon Mountain  https://www.moonmountain.biz/

After a long drive, we got a warm welcome from Leon which felt so awesome, as we had just met a few days earlier and immediately had a great connection, as the newest of his friends, he made us feel incredibly welcome and included in everything. Our accommodation was just beautiful.

One of the first things that hit us as we climbed out of the car was the extreme heat, well we were very grateful for the private splash pool available outside our room, Leon was kind enough to arrange a separate room for Makyla right next to us, which was a great surprise and a very welcome one.

It was a 2 day celebration for the birthday boy, with a gorgeous buffet dinner on the first night.  Getting to know everyone was a real treat, just like that in one night we made 40 new friends.

A couple of Leons friends flew in with micro light planes, which was pretty awesome to watch. After breakfast they took some of the guests for a flight and of course Makyla was right there. She thoroughly enjoyed her flight and getting to see Soussusvlei from above, her beaming smile when she landed said it all.

We had a wonderful spit braai (bbq) dinner that evening, with more drinks, chatter and loads of laughter. Not to forget the magnificent view, nature showing off her very best of a Namibian sunset, that you can't even imagine. Thank you Leon Van Aard for bringing us into your special circle.
The morning of departure a beautiful picture taken with 40 new buddies. The birthday weekend was over and it was time to head back to Walvis Bay.

The Weekend was not without a little stress, as there was an accident, with one of the microlights, it was the flight directly after Makyla's. A sudden gust of unexpected wind pushed the plane to the ground it came down nose first and flipped. Thankfully injuries were minor, some blood and cuts and bruisers, but everyone was fine, the microlight however was not so lucky. The guys chopped it up in the middle of the desert and loaded it for scrap 🙈😳 pretty scary stuff and a stark reminder of how quickly things can change.

After breakfast we exchanged numbers with loads of new and wonderful people, so we could stay in touch, loaded the car and headed back to Intle Breeze to get ready to set sail on Monday.

The drive back felt a lot rougher on the dirt road than it did when we were heading to the party, very long stretches of bouncy terrain, needless to say I am quite the panic mechanic as a passenger, somehow my husband finds this to be rather entertaining 😩 his biggest concern is me ripping off the door handle from holding it too tight 🙄
