Pelourinho - Finally The Old Town
The original plan for today was to head to the mall and purchase a new pair of shoes for Eric as he has only been wearing one shoe for the longest time and it is clearly looking ready for retirement 😳 We had finally made it to Pelourinho the historic district of Salvador as Eric could now hobble around on his crutches and I was just so comfortable and enjoying the vibe, walking around a mall right now would truly have felt like punishment. As graciously as possible I delegated the task to Eric and my gorgeous off spring, while I stayed behind and contemplated my life choices over a glass of fermented grapes. 👌
Off the two of them go, while I sit here in the historic district enjoying my gorgeous bottle of Bahian Chardonnay (Shame poor me 😀) Appreciating my surroundings and the history that this square offers, make me think about my own history and the hardships that life plunges us into and how we survive is truly all that matters.....This old town square of Pelourinho was once a whipping ground for African slaves that behaved badly or committed even the smallest infraction, way back in the colonial days, thankful this is no longer. Today it is a buzz with beauty, colours, music and happiness. This is a classic example of how life changes and how strong we are as humans and how we have the power to overcome darkness and turn it into something beautiful and positive.....Its about how we survive and shine through the other side.
Staring at the Catholic church just 30 meters from me, I find such an overwhelming sense of gratitude for the privileges I have in my life and the amazing humans that are part of my life for the long haul, including the ones that enter my life briefly and add value and memories.
After taking a good walk around Pelourinho through the tiny cobble stone streets and eye balling some of the shops along the way. I decided to venture into one of the very many extravagant Catholic Churches. I have been into and seen many Catholic churches around the world, but the amount of gold in this one was actually a little disturbing for me. So after a short prayer, I headed back out onto the cobble stone, when I suddenly realised just how much time had passed and the fact that my phone battery was almost dead, I decided to get an uber motorbike and get myself back to the boat as Eric and I have a date in what I think is going to be a very interesting place.
